Prospect @ Hinsdale South

Prospect/ Hinsdale South game recap

Coming in to the game, the biggest question mark was if Prospect, having only 3 returning starters from last year’s team, could compete with the power house that is Hinsdale South. The answer throughout the game wasn’t exactly obvious. The 2 powerhouse teams, much like the sophomore game before, fought it out in a defensive game that saw hard hits and tough, physical, play from the stout defenses. While the Prospect Knights were exclusively a shotgun offense, the Hornets of Hinsdale South ran it out of the pistol formation the entire game. For the Hornets, the pistol only helped strengthen the game from Marquese Garrett who was absolutely dominant time and time again and almost single handedly carried the team to a victory. The true player(s) of the game, however, had to be the Hornets defense. Jimmy Martin, Quarterback of the Knights, can attest to that after countless hits and many bruises later. The Knights could not cope with the high level of defensive play and extremely athletic secondary for the Hornets and the Quarterback tandem of Jimmy Martin and Nick Ergastolo could not get the running game going either for the Knights.

The play that changed the score, and possibly the outcome of the game as well, happened at the very end of the first half. Jimmy Martin threw an absolute strike to the back of the end zone complete for a touchdown, but an offensive pass interference call nullified the beautiful throw and that brought about the end of the first-half. The Knights went from tying the game to being down 7-0 into halftime. Talking to Mike Barry, head coach of the Hornets, that play gave the Hornets a huge boost of momentum going into the second half and the Hornets never looked back, winning the game 20-0 against the Knights. The score doesn’t do the game justice because it was a close game until the very end. The Hornets look like the team to beat right now and the Knights definitely have to find a way to work in their youthful team. Either way, Darien Illinois saw a fantastic defensive battle and it was definitely worthy of being the game of the week for Friday Night Lights on SportstownChicago.com.
