Prospect @ Hinsdale South

Prospect/ Hinsdale South game recap

Coming in to the game, the biggest question mark was if Prospect, having only 3 returning starters from last year’s team, could compete with the power house that is Hinsdale South. The answer throughout the game wasn’t exactly obvious. The 2 powerhouse teams, much like the sophomore game before, fought it out in a defensive game that saw hard hits and tough, physical, play from the stout defenses. While the Prospect Knights were exclusively a shotgun offense, the Hornets of Hinsdale South ran it out of the pistol formation the entire game. For the Hornets, the pistol only helped strengthen the game from Marquese Garrett who was absolutely dominant time and time again and almost single handedly carried the team to a victory. The true player(s) of the game, however, had to be the Hornets defense. Jimmy Martin, Quarterback of the Knights, can attest to that after countless hits and many bruises later. The Knights could not cope with the high level of defensive play and extremely athletic secondary for the Hornets and the Quarterback tandem of Jimmy Martin and Nick Ergastolo could not get the running game going either for the Knights.

The play that changed the score, and possibly the outcome of the game as well, happened at the very end of the first half. Jimmy Martin threw an absolute strike to the back of the end zone complete for a touchdown, but an offensive pass interference call nullified the beautiful throw and that brought about the end of the first-half. The Knights went from tying the game to being down 7-0 into halftime. Talking to Mike Barry, head coach of the Hornets, that play gave the Hornets a huge boost of momentum going into the second half and the Hornets never looked back, winning the game 20-0 against the Knights. The score doesn’t do the game justice because it was a close game until the very end. The Hornets look like the team to beat right now and the Knights definitely have to find a way to work in their youthful team. Either way, Darien Illinois saw a fantastic defensive battle and it was definitely worthy of being the game of the week for Friday Night Lights on SportstownChicago.com.

The Mustangs won the toss and received the football first, playing in their home jerseys Maroon uniform, white lettering and grey trim and maroon helmet.

After the Mustangs... Oscar Miranda received the kick off and returned it for a short gain, The BULLDOGS defense held the MUSTANGS to three and out.

The Bulldogs return the kick off for a gain of 15 yards, then gained two first downs on a pass play to Stefan Giminski , and a run play by Nicolas Del Nodal.

The talented QB Hunter Hughes of Riverside Brookfield was moving his team down the field as if there was no defense on the field and   scored on a touchdown pass to Stefan Giminski on a slant on the rightside of the field. 7-0 Bulldogs scoring on their first possession.

As the Mustangs would get the ball back they would GO 3 and out again, because of the Bulldogs defense stopped the pass attempts and run plays attempts to Oscar Miranda.

Next possession The Bulldogs QB found Stefan Gimiski again for his second touchdown of the game but they would miss the field goal making it 13-0.

The Mustangs were not able to slow down the Bulldogs or pose any threat… The Mustangs went three and out on their first 3 possessions.

The BULLDOGS scored again in the second quarter on a run play to Nicolas De Nodal making it 20-0.

By halftime it was 27-0 as Nicolas Del Nodal scored again on a run straight up the middle for a gain of 23 yards and a TD.

The Mustangs Oscar Miranda caught a couple of passes as they were on the move in the 3rd quarter, but with 7 mins remaining the Mustangs got intercepted on the 7 yard line by two way player Stefan Giminski  which ended their drive.

The Bulldogs QB Hunter Hughes who had good protection all night looked poised  surveying the field found Joey Quarino up the middle for a gain of 15 yards, then threw a pass to Devin Moody who scored in the 4 quarter sealing the victory as they fumbled the field goal snap and missed the attempt making it 33 -0 final score.

The Bulldogs did it on defense and offense tonight…As The Mustangs couldn’t get ANYTHING going on defense or offense. Beautiful stadium and a great night for football from Morton West High School.
