Time to Stomp on the Herd?

Jasmine Morales

Will the Windy City Bulls be able to turn a mini winning streak into a full on run? The Bulls have won their last two games with Antonio Blakeney and Jaylen Johnson leading the way in points and rebounds. Antonio Blakeney leading the league in scoring with an average of 34.3 ppg and Jaylen Johnson continuing his double scoring streak to 11 with a career high of 29 points on 12 of 18 shooting while grabbing eight rebounds.
So what can the Bulls do to continue their winning streak? Bulls head coach Charlie Henry believes they have all the ingredients to finish out games. " They are willing and hungry to close out games" the key to closing out games is "staying consistency defensively all four quarters" said Henry.
The Bulls face the Wisconsin Herd tonight. They are 1 and 1 this season against the Herd. The Bulls will have to do without Diamond Stone who was traded to Salt Lake City on January 17th. Guard Jarell Eddie signed a 10 game contract with the Boston Celtics today and will also not be with the Bulls. The Bulls will adjust their lineup with new edition's Christiano Felicio and Paul Zipser who are on assignment from the Chicago Bulls.
Coach Henry favors his Bulls for winning tonight's game. His key to the game are to:

•Take care of home court
•Do the same things they talk about everyday
• Do not stray from who they are as a team unit
Overall Coach Henry is pleased with how the team has progressed. Tip off is at 7pm

Prospect @ Hinsdale South

Prospect/ Hinsdale South game recap

Coming in to the game, the biggest question mark was if Prospect, having only 3 returning starters from last year’s team, could compete with the power house that is Hinsdale South. The answer throughout the game wasn’t exactly obvious. The 2 powerhouse teams, much like the sophomore game before, fought it out in a defensive game that saw hard hits and tough, physical, play from the stout defenses. While the Prospect Knights were exclusively a shotgun offense, the Hornets of Hinsdale South ran it out of the pistol formation the entire game. For the Hornets, the pistol only helped strengthen the game from Marquese Garrett who was absolutely dominant time and time again and almost single handedly carried the team to a victory. The true player(s) of the game, however, had to be the Hornets defense. Jimmy Martin, Quarterback of the Knights, can attest to that after countless hits and many bruises later. The Knights could not cope with the high level of defensive play and extremely athletic secondary for the Hornets and the Quarterback tandem of Jimmy Martin and Nick Ergastolo could not get the running game going either for the Knights.

The play that changed the score, and possibly the outcome of the game as well, happened at the very end of the first half. Jimmy Martin threw an absolute strike to the back of the end zone complete for a touchdown, but an offensive pass interference call nullified the beautiful throw and that brought about the end of the first-half. The Knights went from tying the game to being down 7-0 into halftime. Talking to Mike Barry, head coach of the Hornets, that play gave the Hornets a huge boost of momentum going into the second half and the Hornets never looked back, winning the game 20-0 against the Knights. The score doesn’t do the game justice because it was a close game until the very end. The Hornets look like the team to beat right now and the Knights definitely have to find a way to work in their youthful team. Either way, Darien Illinois saw a fantastic defensive battle and it was definitely worthy of being the game of the week for Friday Night Lights on SportstownChicago.com.

THE TIP OFF FOR HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

@ Morton West HS hosting Riverside Brookfield HS

The Mustangs won the toss and received the football first, playing in their home jerseys Maroon uniform, white lettering and grey trim and maroon helmet.

The Bulldogs were playing in their away jerseys which was white uniforms with blue lettering,  blue helmet and started out on defense.

After the Mustangs... Oscar Miranda received the kick off and returned it for a short gain, The BULLDOGS defense held the MUSTANGS to three and out.

The Bulldogs return the kick off for a gain of 15 yards, then gained two first downs on a pass play to Stefan Giminski , and a run play by Nicolas Del Nodal.

The talented QB Hunter Hughes of Riverside Brookfield was moving his team down the field as if there was no defense on the field and   scored on a touchdown pass to Stefan Giminski on a slant on the rightside of the field. 7-0 Bulldogs scoring on their first possession.

As the Mustangs would get the ball back they would GO 3 and out again, because of the Bulldogs defense stopped the pass attempts and run plays attempts to Oscar Miranda.

Next possession The Bulldogs QB found Stefan Gimiski again for his second touchdown of the game but they would miss the field goal making it 13-0.

The Mustangs were not able to slow down the Bulldogs or pose any threat… The Mustangs went three and out on their first 3 possessions.

The BULLDOGS scored again in the second quarter on a run play to Nicolas De Nodal making it 20-0.

By halftime it was 27-0 as Nicolas Del Nodal scored again on a run straight up the middle for a gain of 23 yards and a TD.

The Mustangs Oscar Miranda caught a couple of passes as they were on the move in the 3rd quarter, but with 7 mins remaining the Mustangs got intercepted on the 7 yard line by two way player Stefan Giminski  which ended their drive.

The Bulldogs QB Hunter Hughes who had good protection all night looked poised  surveying the field found Joey Quarino up the middle for a gain of 15 yards, then threw a pass to Devin Moody who scored in the 4 quarter sealing the victory as they fumbled the field goal snap and missed the attempt making it 33 -0 final score.

The Bulldogs did it on defense and offense tonight…As The Mustangs couldn’t get ANYTHING going on defense or offense. Beautiful stadium and a great night for football from Morton West High School.

2014 High School Football Week 1 Preview: DGS vs Benet.

Remember how long ago it was when high school football was started? Well guess what...

IT. IS. BACK.

We at sportstownchicago.com are proud to announce that we will once again have continuing coverage of Illinois High School Football throughout the 2014 season. Our game of the week for August 29th will be Downers Grove South traveling to Lisle to take on the Benet Academy Redwings. Pregame show starts at 6PM, game to follow at 7PM, with halftime and post game show as well throughout the evening. Be sure to click on LISTEN LIVE/OR listen through the Tunein Radio app by searching 'sportstownchicago.com'

(NOTE: Game will be played at Benedictine University)

You might be already familiar with Benet Academy football, because they had QB Jack Beneventi on their side for the last few seasons. If you don't recall who he is and just how good he ran the offense with Benet, watch some game tape and get re acclimated with him.

HOWEVER, Beneventi has decided to take his talents elsewhere and will be playing his senior season at Fenwick High School. Jack will continue his playing career in college at the University of Iowa.

So... no Beneventi... no problem?

That's the challenge that Benet head coach Pat New faces as the 2014 season is upon him. Last season his team started 6-0, but went on to lose the next 4 games, including a first round playoff exit to Mt. Carmel to end their season. Expectations are still high for Benet, who are looking to make a much deeper run this time around. Senior defensive lineman Jack Kelly is expected to be one of the new faces for Benet Football this season, who is more than motivated to finish the season on a better note than last season.

Meanwhile for the Downers Grove South Mustangs, they want to go deeper in the playoffs as well, as they suffered the same faith Benet did, getting KO'd in the 1st round of the playoffs. And the same overall record as well, finishing at 6-4 to end their season. Benet beat DGS in Downers Grove in the season opener last season, 21-0. DGS Head Coach Mark Molinari has the same vision as Benet Head Coach Pat New: A DEEPER PLAYOFF RUN! And returning senior QB Jordan Skach is leading that charge. He comes into the season with nearly his entire offensive line coming back as well.

GIDDY UP!

Tomorrow night is one of the highlight games in the state of Illinois for high school football. Jack Kelly (DL, Benet) up against Jordan Skach (QB, DGS) should be fun to watch. Keep an eye on Benet's offensive line vs the DGS Defensive line. That could determine who wins the game.

PREDICTION: Downers Grove South 27- Benet 24
-Call it an upset if you want, but something tells me that the Mustangs have something in them to get far down the road. QB Jordan Skach and his returning lineman aren't going down easy, and with a win against Benet on the road potentially, that's the perfect way to get the ball rolling for the Mustangs to make some noise in the state.
